My #ISTE19 Learning

I wanted to come up with a way to share my learning from the conference… to summarize the notes and takeaways I gained over the last 4 days. So I’m aiming for chronological notes and I know this will be longer than most posts here. Please take what you need!

ISTE Bytes – these were previews of sessions to come later in the conference. I heard form several people who drew me in with their pitches! I’m so glad I went because I don’t think I would have joined their sessions otherwise!

The Digitally Authentic Learning Classroom | Steven Anderson, Shaelynn Farnsworth

ISTE Ignite – these were powerful. They included students and educators giving a short, powerful talk, supported by images!

CoffeeEDU with Cate Tolnai and Lindsey Blass – the conversations with these educators and all that joined are so exciting!

Techquity: Creating Learning Environments for Sustainability, Equity and Access | Ken Shelton

PL Pathways! District Innovation around Purposeful Professional Learning Systems | I was lucky to present with other educators from Albuquerque and Newport News as we shared more of what we’re doing!

The Human Geography Project: Using Multimedia Projects to Develop Cultural Literacy | Michael Hernandez

Flipgrid Live – the updates from Flipgrid are so exciting. There are SO many and you can read the Flipgrid blog here, but three really stood out to me:

  • Flipgrid Shorts – video camera and editing redesign makes it simple to create/edit and put together video clips, including a whiteboard option. No longer do we need to deal with advanced software when we want a quick reflection or sharing of what we learned. It makes video part of the formative assessment toolkit. Coming August 1.
  • FlipgridAR – this is available now (update your app!) and brings videos to life from QR codes. For example, student creates artwork or a display and records a flipgrid video talking/reflecting about their use of skills or what they learned. Add a QR code linked to their video and the app will scan it and allow you to watch the video on top of the display/artwork.
  • Accessibility features – immersive reader and closed captioning. For every video and every prompt. In addition to other changes, this makes flipgrid really accessible to ALL our students.

Flocabulary – #GLOWatISTE. Not only was this a fun event, but hearing performances from Flocab peeps gets me every time! Flocabulary is an incredible tool to hook students, provide opportunities for culturally relevant learning opportunities for all grade levels!

Tuesday Mainstage – I listened, but didn’t record any notes. The big takeaways for me – are we going to prepare our students to work with AI and embrace the shakes?

EdTech Coaches Playground | ISTE EdTech Coaches Network | Steve Wick and I held coaching conversations with coaches, designed to share practice and look at problems we’re facing.

Foundational Skills in Sketchnoting: Get Started in Class Today |Nichole Carter |

My favorite thing from this session was the brain science and how we can share this technique with our students to increase their learning and understanding of the content and skills they practice! Check out the link above for more info from Nichole Carter. She has workshops to lead students at all levels through developing a visual dictionary that they can use to make meaning.

Whew! I learned so much. This doesn’t even take into account the conversations I had (like with the team from NM who is on a similar journey to ours, with the addition of boarding schools and the distance to families living on reservations). I watched the closing mainstage speeches from the Amtrak station and while I didn’t sketchnote, I learned even more. The conference is full of incredible people who are doing even more amazing work with students. I am so thankful for the opportunity to attend and learn and grow!
